<p> The number of people accessing the Internet from their smartphone or tablet device on Christmas Day and Boxing Day reached an all-time high in 2012, according to the annual Online Christmas Activity survey from eDigitalResearch and IMRG. 89% of the 2,000 online consumers surveyed went online over the two days with around a third (30%) doing so via their smartphone and another 21% from their tablet device, an increase of 8% and 13% respectively year on year.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The results also found that a record number of consumers were logging on over both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. 65% of consumers said that they accessed the Internet on both days, up from just under 59% last year, proving that the Internet is truly becoming a key part of the festive season.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The results also found that just under half (42%) of consumers browsed the Internet whilst watching television on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, with a quarter (26%) accessing websites from their smartphone and another 19% via their tablet. Whilst the Christmas television schedule remains a key part of the festive season, retailers and brands needs to be aware that consumer behaviour is changing. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Derek Eccleston, Head of Research at eDigitalResearch, comments, The traditional Christmas Day and Boxing Day routines are changing. More and more people this Christmas settled down to watch the television with their smartphone or tablet device to hand. Nowadays when someone sees a product being advertised or something that catches their eye on TV, the first thing they are likely to do is to reach for their Internet enabled device and search for it online. This provides brands and retailers the opportunity to reach people during one of the few traditionally non-shopping days a year and make a genuine and real impact on sales. It is therefore imperative that brands integrate all channels, including their marketing messages, to make sure that everything from their website and mobile app to their TV adverts, are aligned.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Mobile and tablet devices are also playing an integral role in the run up to the big day. This Christmas, just under half (48%) of smartphone owners did some pre-purchase research from their mobile device, an increase of about 9% on last year. Similarly, around one third (30%) made a Christmas purchase from their mobile.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Just under 1 in 5 smartphone owners (17%) indicated that they were likely to spend more on their smartphone or tablet device in the run up to next Christmas. However, an additional 31% could also be encouraged to do the same as long as retailers do more to ensure that their mobile experience is as quick, easy and seamless as possible. Just 24% of mobile shoppers this Christmas rated their experience as very easy indicating that more needs to be done by retailers to improve the mobile shopping journey. However, this is an increase of 6% on last years satisfaction rating, suggesting that mobile developments are moving in the right direction.</p>

<p>Andy Mulcahy, Head of Communications at IMRG, commented: We know from previous research that 80% of consumers use their mobile devices in front of the TV (known as second screening). This propensity for dual visual engagement is an interesting development, as it essentially makes TV adverts and sponsored programmes retail channels, and uniquely time-sensitive ones at that. A really advanced mobile and social media campaign that pushes products relevant to a sponsored TV programme at the right time could have a positive impact on conversion rates, providing a highly relevant and immersive experience for the consumer.</p>

<p> When 2012 began, it certainly wasnt quiet at the McElroy Films office. New additions to the team sparked a move to the current Mall Road location in Burlington. At the same time, local crooner, Brian Evans, was looking for a Super Bowl ad featuring Red Sox legend Jim Rice and non-profit giant Fenway Health needed new videos for their annual gala fundraisers. The country was also in the thick of the Republican Primaries and the nominees were jousting over New Hampshire. McElroy Films was covering all the action.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>We were awarded the task of following Newt Gingrich as his personal videographers, explained Ben McElroy, owner and executive producer of McElroy Films. At the drop of the hat, we would travel to the distant corners of the state as Mr. Gingrich made appearances, then we would return home and film for Brian Evans, Kaz, and our other clients. It was very exciting for both myself and the company.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>And so, 2012 began with a bang for the video production firm and the exciting new projects and clients would keep the pace up throughout the year.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Our company pushed for a greater diversity of work last year, and we got it.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>It was a faithful day in December 2011 when Brian Evans and his agent pitched his plans for his new hit single, At Fenway, to McElroy Films. First would be a 30 second spot that would air in several markets during the Super Bowl to be filmed in January.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Brian had seen our work online and decided to call, said Evan T. Perry, director and senior editor. A month later we were looking through the lens at Jim Rice and Brian enjoying some coffee at the diner. It was very exhilarating, especially when the spot was seen in many places across the U.S.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Evan used Brians initial ideas to create an original script, then they found the beautiful Groveland Diner and its vintage Jukebox. After the initial legwork, the shooting went very easily.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The original idea called for a bar, but the Red Sox, after the fried chicken and beer season, would have none of it. So why not a diner instead? Evan laughed. Creativity can get you out of any problem, and the quality result speaks for itself.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Around the same time, Kaz USA, a corporation that manages such brands as Honeywell, PUR Water Filters, and Braun, was looking for a production company to film a video showcasing the Honeywell Product line-up.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The Honeywell videos were to take place in a modern home setting, Ben explained. We scoured all of New England for the perfect home that matched the brands exact specifications.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>After a house was found near Springfield, MA, McElroy casted the actors to play the family in the video, auditioned vocal talent, and put together a comprehensive prop list.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>By far, this video was the most involved project that our team had taken on, but we were able to fulfill and exceed all of our clients needs and they have had us produce additional videos for PUR later in the year with more on the horizon.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>2012 would be a big year for product videos, as McElroy Films would produce ads featuring the Mitsubishi PATHFAST blood-testing machine as well as PUR filter installation videos.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Product shooting is something we all see on TV and on the web everyday to promote everything from deodorant to cars, Ben explained. It takes a lot of planning and careful lighting to make sure the products look their best.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>After the success of the Brian Evans spot, Brian approached McElroy Films in the summer with his latest endeavor: A music video at Fenway park featuring none-other-than William Shatner. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>When Brian approached us with his idea to shoot at Fenway Park, we couldnt have been more excited, Ben exclaimed. But we also knew a project of this size would require careful planning.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>After scripting the music video, and securing the props and production crew, all that remained was Red Sox approval. The Sox take every shoot at Fenway Park very seriously as to not damage the integrity of the playing surface or diminish the fields hundred-year-old legacy. In fact, this was to be the very first music video shot at Fenway Park with MLB approval. McElroy Films was up to the task, and on a chilly night in September, with hundreds of extras, William Shatner, and Ernie Boch Jr. in starring roles, the McElroy team shot the music video until the wee hours of the morning.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Fenway Park is a busy place, so in order to get the time slot we needed, we had to wait until after a game and shoot until about 5 am, Ben said. We needed a few caffeinated drinks to get us through, but it went extremely well.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The video will be released worldwide on the opening day of the Red Sox season this April. Until then, a trailer for the music video is being shown ahead of every AMC movie in the United States until the music videos release.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Its incredible to see our work on the big screen, Ben mused. Everyone dreams about creating something that is so widely seen and enjoyed.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Non-profit videos also flooded into the office from return clients as well as new ones.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>This year we were fortunate to be able to work with CCFA, Fenway Health, and veterans to produce several powerful videos, Ben said.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The CCFA, or the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America, was especially busy having McElroy Films produce national-level videos promoting all their programs from the Take Steps walks to Team Challenge marathons, triathlons, and bike races. Videographers from McElroy were even sent to Lake George, NY and Akron, Ohio to film important CCFA events.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The CCFA has been using video very successfully to promote their fundraising events and its very exciting to be involved, traveling, and meeting the people that have the diseases and seeing the work that is being done to find cures.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Other videos produced in 2012 include stories from veterans who have found new life at the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center to educational videos for Childrens Hospital Boston, Pakachoag Music School, and anti-bullying campaigns for local schools.</p>

<p>Every year since the start of this business, we have grown both in the number of employees and in the number of clients that have trusted us to create videos to promote their products, ideas, and goals, Ben described. 2012 has been the best year yet, and I only see a brighter year ahead in 2013.</p>
